What is PDLC switchable film and how does it work?
PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. The film contains a layer of liquid crystals sandwiched between two transparent conductive layers. When no power is applied, the crystals align randomly, scattering light and making the glass appear frosted. When low-voltage AC power is applied, the crystals align uniformly, allowing light to pass through freely and making the glass appear clear. Switching happens in under 0.1 seconds.
Can PDLC film be applied to my existing glass?
Yes. Self-adhesive PDLC film can be retrofitted to most flat glass surfaces without replacing the glass. This makes it significantly more cost-effective than installing factory-laminated smart glass panels. During our free site assessment, we'll confirm compatibility with your existing glass type, thickness and frame system.
What does it default to when the power is off?
Standard PDLC is frosted (private) when power is off and clear when powered. This is the most common configuration and is preferred for safety, privacy and energy reasons — if there is ever a power interruption, the glass defaults to a private state. We can also supply "reverse PDLC" that is clear when off and frosted when powered, depending on your application.
How is the smart glass controlled?
We offer several control options: a standard wall switch (most common), a handheld remote, a timer relay, a smartphone or tablet app via WiFi, integration with building management systems (BMS), or voice control via Alexa and Google Home. The control type is chosen during the design phase and all wiring is concealed during installation.
Is smart glass safe? What happens if the glass breaks?
PDLC film itself adds a safety element — similar to standard safety film, it helps hold glass fragments in place if the glass breaks. For applications requiring enhanced safety, we supply smart glass on a tempered or laminated glass substrate, which meets the highest safety standards and is specified for healthcare, hospitality and high-traffic commercial environments.
Can smart glass also be used as a projection screen?
Yes — this is one of the most popular applications for PDLC film in UAE boardrooms and retail spaces. When in the frosted (off) state, the film acts as a high-gain rear-projection screen compatible with standard laser projectors. This eliminates the need for a motorised screen or separate projection wall, turning your glass partition into a dual-purpose feature.
